Phoenix News

We have been making cakes for almost a year and are delighted to announce our trial offering them to a wider audience. Cakes need to be pre-ordered and can be collected from Phoenix in Milton on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays between 2 and 3 pm.

Our cake making began in lockdown, with restrictions leaving it too complicated to produce a two course meal for the workforce, whilst maintaining a socially distanced kitchen. However, we then had some very talented cooks kicking their heels, and started experimenting with baking cakes. Fast forward for eighteen months, and we now have a small (but perfectly formed) cake business.

Our (not so) secret ingredient, is, as always, our very talented co-workers, who have, excuse the pun, totally risen to this new challenge!

We are a small team, so when staff absences, planned or otherwise, occur, everyone lends a hand, and it is often then a case of the co-workers teaching the staff, as shown in Jude learning from David, how to de-nail and Noeleen receiving painting guidance from Nuala and Paul – every day is a school day!

Our lovely volunteer trio of gardening enthusiasts, Janet, Trish and Claire, have breathed new life into our kitchen garden, and enthused our co-workers. These potatoes, along with the salad, and beetroot coleslaw for lunch on Wednesday combined with our home grown lettuce and Nasturtium flower salad on Thursday are a great examples of our “fork to fork” ethos.
